Course summary
What will I Study? In History, you will analyse and evaluate sources and the work of historians, evaluate evidence to build convincing arguments, develop effective essay writing and build judgement and opinions on modern-day current affairs. • Paper 1 – Breadth Study - The British Empire c.1857-1967. This includes: Empire in India and the rest of Asia; Empire in Africa including the Scramble for Africa, Egypt and the Suez Canal, and the Boer War and the origins of Apartheid in South Africa; settlers colonies such as Australia, Canada and New Zealand; the Middle East and the Partition of Palestine; informal Empire in China, the Ottoman Empire and Latin America; British imperial policies, the role of indigenous resistance and collaboration and ideas about ‘race’ and the impact on domestic British politics and culture. • Paper 2 – Depth Study - Birth of the USA c.1760-1801. This includes: Origins of modern America and development of society; relations with native peoples; the right of nations to rule others; the nature of protest - political, intellectual and economic; causes and ideology of revolution; the war of independence; formation of new political institutions, and democracy. • Coursework - Russia 1855-1964

Assessment
In Year 12 you will begin writing coursework (NEA) worth 20% of the final grade. At the end of Y13, you will sit two exams: Paper 1 (British Empire) - 2 hours 30 mins - 40% Paper 2 (Birth of the USA) - 2 hours 30 mins - 40%
