Course Outline: The duration of the course is either one year to gain an AS award or two years for the full A level qualification. Skills: Whilst it is not essential to have studied GSCE RE, it is essential that you enjoy the subject. You will engage with interesting and challenging questions and you should enjoy discussing different viewpoints. You will be required to write analytically about different views. Philosophy asks us to analyse our existence and as such explores the nature and existence of God, religious experience and religious language. Ethics examines theories of moral behaviour and these are applied to contemporary ethical issues. The religion element of the course explores the beliefs and practices of Christianity. You will learn different theories and must be able to apply them to various situations or questions, and evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Future progressions from this course: This course will allow you the opportunity to develop your skills in analysing philosophical and ethical arguments, beliefs and ideas. It will also enable you to further your own perspective on ultimate issues concerning life and the world. It is a recognised qualification for entrance to university and can lead to a number of varied career paths, including: banking, media, journalism, law, teaching, social work, and more.
A minimum of five GCSE grade 5s or above. A grade 9-5 in English is essential and a GCSE in RE (grade 9-5) is preferable although not essential.
Paper 1– Philosophy of Religion and religious ethics. 50% of A level mark Written examination 3 hr. Paper 2 – Study of religion Christianity and religious dialogues. 50% of total A level mark Written examination 3 hr.
