Course summary

Biology is the study of living organisms and the natural world around us. This course is excellent for students who are interested in biology whether you want to study it further at university or not. The course includes many of the same topics as GCSE in more detail and at a higher level. Students will also have the opportunity to improve their lab and practical skills as there is a practical component to the course. Year 1 - A Level Topics 1 – 4: Paper 1 • Biological molecules • Cells • Organisms exchange substances with their environment • Genetic information, variation and relationships between organisms Year 2 – A Level Topics 5 – 8: Paper 2 • Energy transfers in and between organisms • Organisms responds to changes in their internal and external environments • Genetics, populations, evolution and ecosystems • The control of gene expression

Entry requirements

Must attain five 9 - 5 grades in full course GCSE subjects including Maths and English Language or Literature. No vocational subjects allowed to count in the five 9 – 5 grades. Indivdual subject critera also applies. 6 in Maths and 5 in English Language. At least a 7 in Biology or 7-7 in combined science We recommend studying Maths alongside Biology at A level especially if you want to study a science or medicine at university.

How you'll be assessed

100% examination at the end of Y13. Practical endorsement reported separately – pass/fail Paper 1: 2 hours (year 1content) Paper 2: 2 hours (year 2 content) Paper 3: 2 hours (mix of year 1 and 2 content with focus on practicals and a 25-mark holistic essay)
