The main purpose of the qualification is to develop the scientific principles and practical techniques which will prepare learners to progress to higher education or employment in areas related to food, human or environmental science. They will learn to carry out experiments safely and accurately when testing products to yield results that can be used to inform the next stage in a scientific process. The following units are covered in the extended certificate: • Unit 1 – Science Fundamentals (2 Hour Exam) Creates a solid foundation for the rest of the units covering atomic structure and the periodic table, reactions and bonding, cells and organisms, materials, electricity and more. • Unit 2 – Laboratory Techniques (2 Hour Exam) Covers generic skills required by technicians working in any kind of laboratory including working for an industrial company. • Unit 6 – Control of Hazards in the Laboratory Presents an overview of the most common hazards encountered in typical research labs and will help you maintain a safe work environment. • Unit 18 – Microbiology Learn about the commercial use of microorganisms in food production and in medical microbiology. • Unit 21 – Product Testing Techniques Use a range of laboratory techniques in your investigations from inception, through to testing products.
A minimum of five grade 4s at GCSE or equivalent, with at least a Merit or grade 4 in a relevant equivalent qualification. English 5 and Maths 5. Must have a grade 5/5 for Trilogy Science (double award) or at least a Merit at Vocational Level 2
The Cambridge Technical Extended Certificate in Applied Science is made up of 5 mandatory units. Two of the units are externally assessed exams and the other three units are internally assessed by staff and moderated by OCR.
