Course summary

Further Mathematics is in addition to A-level Mathematics and must be studied alongside A-Level Mathematics. The course develops your knowledge from the standard A-level and delves further into higher level mathematics. Areas which will be covered include: introduction to complex numbers, parabolic and hyperbolic equations and matrices. In year 13 you will go on to study differential equations which can be used for mathematical modelling in a range of areas for example biology and physics. Other aspects of mathematics covered are statistics, mechanics and discrete mathematics. Mechanics and statistics will be building upon work covered in the standard A-level whilst discrete mathematics looks at algorithms used by machines such as Sat Navs. Where can it lead? Many students go on to study mathematics at degree level or a subject that has a significant amount of mathematical content. More universities are requesting Further Mathematics as a requirement to study mathematics at degree level. Many students wanting to study engineering, physics or another subject with a large content of mathematics would find this A-level helpful with their course.
