The Spanish A-level is an exciting and varied course, as well as being an ideal next step on the road to becoming a fluent Spanish speaker and expert on Hispanic culture. We will be using a variety of resources, texts, audio and short films, to learn about Spanish and Latin American history, politics and culture. The six sub-themes to be covered in Y12 are a logical continuation of themes covered in GCSE, but with greater emphasis on an understanding of the wider cultural context. They are: • Los valores tradicionales y modernos en la familia, el ciberespacio, la igualdad de los sexos, la influencia de los ídolos, la identidad regional de España y el patrimonio cultural. In Y13, the six themes aim to deepen understanding of political and social issues in the Hispanic world. They are: • La inmigración, el racismo, la convivencia, los jóvenes de hoy, monarquías y dictaduras y los movimientos populares. We will also study in detail a Spanish film and a Spanish play. (Literature and film are not only an excellent way of improving comprehension of a foreign language; they are also a fantastic way of sparking discussion and debate)
• A minimum of seven grade 5s in full course GCSE subjects. No vocational subjects allowed. • English Language grade 5 • At least a grade 6 at GCSE
Paper 1 (50% of A-level) Listening, reading and writing Written exam: 2 hours 30 minutes 100 marks Paper 2 (20% of A-level) Writing Written exam: 2 hours 80 marks Paper 3 (30%) Speaking Oral exam: 21-23 minutes (including 5 minutes preparation time) 60 marks
