Spanish
Course summary
WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? For us, language learning goes much deeper than knowing just the language. At A Level, you are not only exposed to the target language but also to the culture, history, literature and politics that surround the language itself. We provide a deep understanding of another language to improve students’ native tongue, communication, empathy and understanding skills. The MFL department is committed to broadening your understanding of the world and developing strong, long-life linguistic skills. At Key Stage 5, MFL classes are small enough to get almost individual attention. You will have 5 hours per week contact time and a further minimum of one hour with the language assistant, by arrangement. Again, we are fortunate to be able to offer such support by native speakers. COURSE DESCRIPTION At Spanish A Level you will master the language, which means having a good command of language systems e.g. lexis (words), phonology (pronunciation, stress and intonation) grammar, the spoken and written discourse, etc. through all four language skills e.g. listening, speaking, reading and writing. You will develop extra skills, for example, translation between English and Spanish. Our strategy includes a combination of exploring authentic materials and topics of Spanish journalistic texts on current affairs. You will develop a high level of literacy in the Spanish language as well as the linguistic and analytical ability to do the transfer appropriately and develop critical skills to discuss cultural issues in speaking and to analyse and evaluate literature and films.
