WHY STUDY THIS COURSE? Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. Psychology is a multifaceted discipline and includes many subfields of research such as health, clinical, social, developmental, cognitive, and biological processes. This course allows students to develop a range of independent learning skills such as organization, mathematical, research, examination, writing and design, that are modelled in class and sequenced across Years 12 and 13. A Level Psychology can lead to a number of rewarding professions, including: » Routes into medicine and the NHS » Educational psychologist » Clinical psychologist » Neuropsychology » Health psychology » Business psychology. WHAT WILL I LEARN? Upon successful enrolment students are set off on the summer tasks that begin in June to give them a deep dive in to the subject developing their curiosity, independent learning skills, using virtual and media resources. In the first year, students are introduced to a range of fields in Psychology such as social influence, memory, attachment, psychopathology, the main approaches, research methods and biopsychology. Students are taught how to apply their knowledge to scenarios this ensures that they secure their understanding and develop confidence as academic Psychology learners. Current research directs us that there is a mental health crisis looming with rising rates of anxiety, depression, and addictions. In addition to this, the course reflects current British Values such as democracy and law by the options chosen in the second year of study such as gender, addiction, and schizophrenia. A range of issues and debates are examined synoptically during this course such as freewill and determinism, the use of idiographic vs nomothetic approaches and ethical implications of research.
GCSE Level 7 in English, Maths and Science
PAPER 1 — INTRODUCTORY TOPICS IN PSYCHOLOGY Comprised of a 2-hour exam worth one-third of the total grade, students are required to answer questions on social influence, memory, attachment, and psychology. PAPER 2 — PSYCHOLOGY IN CONTEXT Comprised of a 2-hour exam worth one-third of the total grade, students are required to answer questions on approaches, biopsychology, and research methods. PAPER 3 — ISSUES AND OPTIONS IN PSYCHOLOGY Comprised of a 2-hour exam worth one-third of the total grade, students are required to answer questions on issues and debates, gender, schizophrenia, and addiction. ASSESSED SKILLS All papers assess written communication, mathematics, statistics, and research methods. All papers and sections require AO1 (knowledge), AO2 (application) & AO3 skills (discussion).
