Physics is the most fundamental of all the natural sciences and its theories attempt to describe the behaviour of the smallest building blocks of matter, light, the universe and everything in between. If you are already interested in GCSE Physics, you are good at maths, and you would like to know more about fascinating ideas such as quantum mechanics, relativity and cosmology, then physics may be for you. You will study physics in a range of different contexts, conveying the excitement of contemporary physics. The course provides a distinctive structure within which you will learn about fundamental physical concepts and about physics in everyday and technological settings. Practical skills are embedded within the course and you are expected to carry out practical work in preparation for a written examination that will specifically test these skills.
In order for students to study A Level courses, they will need the following:- An Average Point Score of 5.5 or more at GCSE Level, including at least a grade 5 in GCSE English Language and at least a grade 5 in GCSE Maths. 6/6 in Double Science or 6 in Physics plus a 6 in another Science (if triple Science studied)
There is no coursework on this course. However, your performance during Practicals will be assessed. There are three exams at the end of the two years for A-level. Unit/Component Paper 1:Fundamentals of physics Weighting : 41% Assessment duration : 2 hour 15 minutes examination Unit/Component Paper 2: Scientific literacy in physics Weighting : 37% Assessment duration : 2 hour 15 minutes examination Unit/Component Paper 3: Practical skills in physics Weighting : 22% Assessment duration : 1 hour30 minutes examination Studying A-level Physics offers an infinite number of amazing career opportunities including: • Geophysicist/field seismologist • Healthcare scientist • Finance • Banking • IT • medical physics • Higher education lecturer • Lawyer • Radiation protection practitioner • Research scientist (physical sciences) • Scientific laboratory technician • Secondary school teacher • Meteorologist • Structural engineer • Acoustic engineer • Product/process development scientist • Systems developer • Technical author. • You can also move into engineering, astrophysics, chemical physics, nanotechnology, renewable energy and more, the opportunities are endless...
