Course summary

This is a full time, day course which must be studied alongside two other AS courses. A Level pathways are designed to prepare you for higher education and beyond. The A level course in Mathematics takes two years to complete and cannot be completed in a single year of study. This is an inspiring and challenging course for all skilful mathematicians with a good GCSE grade. The course is rewarding and highly structured to meet the needs of all students. Members of staff have a wealth of experience working with students; some have taught the course for over 28 years. You will have access to course materials, past papers and special topic sheets which must be completed after each major section has been taught. Regular assessments is an integral part of the course. All course materials are uploaded on to Google Classroom allowing all students access to notes and revision materials at all times whilst studying the course.

Entry requirements

You will need 5 GCSEs Grades 4 or above, two of which must be Grade 6. You must have GCSE maths (Grade 6 or above) in the summer of the year that you intend to study the course. So grade 6 or higher in GCSE maths summer 23 for study in August 23, also need English (Grade 4 or above).

How you'll be assessed

Mandatory units: Unit 1 - Pure Mathematics: • Proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration • Numerical methods • Assessment: calculator paper written, 2 hours, 100 marks – 33.3% of A Level award Unit 2 - Pure Mathematics: • Proof, algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, sequences and series, trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration • Numerical methods • Assessment: calculator paper written, 2 hours, 100 marks – 33.3% of A Level award Unit 3 consists of Statistics and Mechanics. In Statistics you will study the following topics: • Statistical sampling • Data presentation and interpretation • Probability • Statistical distributions • Statistical hypothesis testing In Mechanics you will study the following topics: • Vectors • Quantities and units in mechanics • Kinematics • Forces and Newton’s Laws • Assessment: calculator paper written, 2 hours, 100 marks – 33.3% of A Level award
