Course summary

Law is an exciting and dynamic subject. Laws are rules, usually made by government, that are used to order the way in which a society behaves. Law plays an essential role in every area of our lives as well as those of organizations and institutions. You will study key aspects of the English legal system plus areas of Criminal and Civil law, including: - How laws are made and how the legal system works - Police powers, law enforcement and different types of offences - Solving disputes in civil law - Rights and responsibilities You will learn how to understand and apply the law to real-life situations, and develop the necessary skills of analysis, researching, understanding complex text and attention to detail. This subject particularly complements subjects in social sciences and humanities, such as Sociology, Psychology, History, RS and Criminology. It is a 2 year course, and carries the same UCAS points as an A level, so is an excellent route into higher education. Course Units: Year 1 Dispute Solving in Civil Law Investigating aspects of Criminal Law and the Legal System Year 2 Applying the Law Aspects of Family Law Course Can Lead To: A good understanding of the legal system in the UK will be an asset in any future career. You’ll also develop valuable transferable skills for further study and employment, including critical analysis, research skills, following a brief, self-directed study and working to deadlines. The Applied Law Level 3 BTEC will particularly appeal to students interested in a career in law and the wider legal profession, as well as being relevant to careers in business, social work, probation and prison services and the police. Applied Law BTEC provides a good route into many degree courses and higher apprenticeships. Course Highlights: As part of your study you will visit the Magistrates courts and Crown Court at the Old Bailey, have the opportunity to learn from professionals working in the field of Law. Mock trials will give you the chance to prosecute, defend and judge cases. You will also practice your skills of mediation and different ways of resolving legal disputes.

Entry requirements

To qualify to study 3 A level/ Applied subjects, you will need to achieve 6 GCSEs at Grade 4 or above, preferably including English Language or Math's at grade 4 or above. In addition/ within those 6 GCSEs, for this subject you will need to achieve Grade 4 or above in English Language and English Literature.

How you'll be assessed

Assessment for the course is 50% Exams and 50% Coursework and controlled assessment. 50% of the marks for your total qualification are gained in year 1, and 50% in year 2.
