Course summary

This is a very engaging and exciting course. It is a full two-year BTEC course that is equivalent to three A-Levels. This BTEC is the perfect blend of both theory and practical learning, exploring the theory and applying it to real-life localized sporting situations. At the start of this course, you will be instilled with a good understanding of functional anatomy and applied psychology to form the basis of a solid foundation. This foundation will be nurtured and developed through many topics, including coaching, physical activity for individuals and groups, sociocultural issues, fitness, and many more. This course will also give you the knowledge, understanding, and skills that underpin the study of Sport and Exercise Science, providing you with additional breadth and depth to fully prepare you for further study or Training. Sport and Exercise Science can also assist with your progression into a range of different career opportunities, including sports development, sports coaching, physiotherapy, and personal training. You could also become one of the next-generation PE teachers!

Entry requirements

A minimum of 5 grade 4s, including a grade 4 or above in GCSE English Language, is required. GCSE Maths must also be at grade 3 as a minimum. If GCSE Maths is at a grade 3, you would have to resit it. If GCSE English Language is at a grade 3 (even if GCSE English Literature is at a grade 4), you would have to resit it.

How you'll be assessed

This BTEC is assessed through thirteen units; four of these are assessed externally, and the other nine are assessed internally over the course of two years. Externally assessed units allow you to demonstrate the breadth and depth of achievement. The two types of assessments include examinations and a set task. Examinations are when all students take the same assessment at the same time, which is normally a written outcome. A set task is where all students take an assessment during a defined window and demonstrate understanding through the completion of a vocational task. Internally assessed units include writing up the findings of your own research, using case studies to explore complex or unfamiliar situations, and demonstrating practical and technical skills.
