Course summary

In the first year students study four approaches (Social, Cognitive, Biological and Learning) to gain a foundation in psychology. Topics include obedience, prejudice, memory and the brain. In the second year students then go on do Clinical Psychology, which is the study of mental health disorders and treatments, and Criminal Psychology, which is the study of criminality, courtroom psychology and treatment program. Psychology is the study of human behavior. It therefore feeds into most careers where an understanding of people and their behavior is required. Specific examples include teaching, counselling, social work, nursing, medicine, marketing, advertising and the police.

Entry requirements

It is desirable that students have at least a Grade 5 in Math, because of the statistical content in the course, and at least a Grade 6 in another humanities course to prepare them for the essay writing and critical debate. At least a Grade 6 in a Science would also be helpful for the research and experimental aspects of the course.

How you'll be assessed

There is no coursework or controlled assessment in psychology, it is 100% exam. There are three exams (two hours long). All are in June. Assessment comes in the form of short and medium answer questions and one essay per topic.
