Studying Spanish at A-Level gives students a broad overview of Hispanic culture. By the end of the course, students will be able to communicate to a high academic standard, on a broad range of topics. Students will also undertake a research project on a topic of their choice. Year 1 Theme 1: Aspects of Hispanic society: current trends: -Modern and Traditional Values -Cyberspace -Equal Rights Theme 2: Artistic Culture in the Hispanic World: -Modern Day Idols -Spanish Regional Identity -Cultural Heritage -Film: Volver (Almodóvar) Year 2 Theme 3: Multiculturalism in Spanish Society - Immigration - Racism - Integration Theme 4: Aspects of Political Life in the Hispanic World - Today’s youth, tomorrow’s citizens - Monarchies and dictatorships - Popular movements Book: Como Agua para Chocolate (Laura Esquivel) Independent research project
Must attain five 9 - 5 grades in full course GCSE subjects including Maths and English Language or Literature. No vocational subjects allowed to count in the five 9 – 5 grades. Indivdual subject critera also applies. At least a 6 at GCSE French. Native speakers can liaise with the department to sit a suitability test.
Paper 1: Reading, Listening and translation 50% Paper 2: Writing (essay on a film and a book) .20% Paper 3: Oral exam 30%
