Course summary

Content: Does communication and the power of language intrigue you? Do you want to learn how and why language works to empower your own use of language for a career in law, journalism, linguistics, or education? Do you want to learn how it works in order to learn to benefit humanity? Or do you want to learn how to use language to manipulate others to earn huge amounts in the lucrative fields of advertising, marketing, and wider business? A-Level Language is a rigorous, and endlessly fascinating course, examining the power, complexity, and diversity of language use in the English-speaking world. It provides an opportunity to study at an advanced level a topic wholly of your own choice. Examples of previous topics include: ● The language used by sports commentators ● The language use of residents of Amble vs Alnwick ● How local children face obstacles learning phonics due to their Northern accents ● How fantasy languages such as Klingon, Dothraki, or Nadsat are developed We study the diversity of the English Language as it is spoken by genders, by social groups, in regions, in occupations, and in classes, in ethnicities, across the world, and across time. We explore different people’s conflicting attitudes towards the language of others. We study how children aged 0-11 acquire spoken language, and how they learn to read and write.
