Course summary

Media Studies has been a popular option in the Sixth Form at Haybridge since 2008. This contemporary and creative course allows you to study the media in an academic context and apply the knowledge and understanding gained to the process of creating your own media productions, preparing you for possible careers in marketing, media production, journalism, broadcasting and more. This is a rigorous course of study, which will include analysis and critical thinking skills; understanding of the media and its role both historically and currently in society, culture, politics and the economy; understanding of the dynamic and changing relationships between media forms, products, industries and audiences; the study of global and historical media; application of theory and terminology to analyse and compare products and contexts; critical debate about academic theories; creative media production using sophisticated practical skills. You will benefit from the following resources and facilities: dedicated media teaching room in the Sixth Form block. experienced, specialist teachers. suite of 24 Apple Macs and HD digital recording equipment. A wide variety of teaching and learning styles are used including class discussions, group work, paired and individual presentations, use of the internet and of new technologies as well as practical work and research. You will study nine media forms, apply the academic ideas and arguments of eighteen key media theorists, and approach set textual examples by applying the key theoretical framework: 1. Media Language: how the media communicate meanings through their forms, codes, conventions and techniques. 2. Media Representations: how the media portray events, issues, individuals and social groups. 3. Media Industries: how the processes or production, distribution and circulation affect media forms and platforms. 4. Media Audiences: how media forms target, reach and address audiences, how audiences interpret and respond to them and how members of audiences become producers themselves. The UK's media industry is exciting and competitive. It requires talented, multi-skilled people who successfully use their creativity, imagination, critical skills, and technical and design abilities, to turn their ideas into effective media products. This course takes an academic approach and reflects the rigours of the media industry. As in the industry, analysis, planning, design and creative work require a great deal of commitment and the ability to meet deadlines. This course is ideally suited to students with an interest in the media industry and in learning practical, transferable skills through a combination of exam and coursework based assessment. Media Studies combines particularly well with A Level Business, English Language, Sociology, Psychology, Economics, Graphics, Art and ICT.
