Course summary

History Exam Board: AQA Course leader: Mr Poole Course name: A Level History Contact: pom@moseley.bham.sch.uk General Information Studying history helps us understand and draw similarities from the past with the present day, enabling us to better understand the world we live in today, such as why there is so much conflict. By applying this knowledge to the present day, we can learn lessons from past mistakes or successes and make informed choices about the future. The skills that are developed also enable students to fully evaluate the reliability and credibility of information that is presented to them, whether that is through newspapers or online platforms. Course Outline The history a-level is split into three components: a depth study, a breadth study and a historical investigation. Breadth Study (40% of A-Level) The breadth study involves the study of significant historical developments over a period of around 50 years and enables students to develop secure understanding of the process of change over time. The breadth study requires students to develop an understanding of the nature of causes and consequences, of change and continuity and of similarity and differences over a long period of time; the links between perspectives, such as political, economic, social or religious; and the role played by individuals, groups, ideas or ideology. Topic to be taught: British Empire, c1857-1967 Depth Study (40% of A-Level) This involved an in-depth study of a period of major historical change or development. Students will gain deep understanding of change and continuity through the study of the interrelationships between perspectives, such as political, economic, social or religious; and the role played by individuals, groups, ideas or ideology. They will develop detailed knowledge and understanding of developments and the roles of individuals, groups, ideas and ideology. Topic to be taught: The Cold War, c1945–1991 Historical investigation (20% of A-Level) Student will carry out an investigation of a period spanning 100 years and produce a 3000 word essay. The subject of this investigation must differ from the content of the breadth and depth study. The investigation offers students the chance to develop skills that will be vital for university, such as the ability to write a long, sustained and substantiated piece of writing independently. Students can pick their own question, although the question we recommend will be: ‘To what extent was the issue of slavery the main contributing factor for the outbreak of the American Civil War in the period 1776 to 1863?’’ Careers and Higher Education Opportunities: History is a facilitating subject. The skills are highly valued by all universities. Students with an A level in History will go on to do degrees like History, Politics & International Relations, Medicine, Law and Engineering. Extra-curricular enrichment opportunities Students are supported through the course with a wide range of catch-up session and drop in classes where they can discuss classwork in more depth. The department are also investigating the possibility of doing an over-seas trip to Berlin to develop students’ understanding of the Cold War.
