Applied Psychology Exam Board: Pearson Course leader: Mrs Marwaha Course name: BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Applied Psychology Contact: SAU@moseley.bham.sch.uk General Information The qualification provides the knowledge, understanding and skills that will prepare you for further study or training. Everyone taking this qualification will study four units, covering the following content areas: • applications of psychological approaches • conducting psychological research • health psychology • criminal and forensic psychology The content allows you to concentrate on the development of your knowledge and understanding of psychology, as well as the application of skills that are important in psychology, over an extended period. Exploring these various areas will allow you to choose a specific specialist area in which you wish to develop your knowledge and skills further in higher education. Course Outline In Year 12 you will study two units, each worth 25% of your qualification: Unit 1: Psychological Approaches & Applications- This unit is assessed through an examination. The exam consists of short answer and extended writing questions and lasts 1 hour 30 minutes. Unit 2: Conducting Psychological Research- This unit is assessed through a piece of primary research that you will conduct using Psychological research methods and processes. (internally assessed at your centre and externally moderated) In year 13 you will continue to study another two units, both worth 50% in total: Unit 3: Health Psychology – This unit is assessed through examination. The exam consists of short answer and extended writing questions and lasts 2 hours. Unit 4: Criminal & Forensic Psychology- This unit is assessed through a piece of primary research that you will conduct using Psychological research methods and processes. (internally assessed at your centre and externally moderated) Careers and Higher Education Opportunities The qualification carries UCAS points and is recognised by higher education providers as contributing to admission requirements to many relevant applied psychology courses. Some examples of the kinds of professions that value Applied Psychology qualifications include: Law, Education, Social Work, Police, Nursing, Medicine, Prison Service, Business and Marketing, Finance, Research and Government. Students can also go on to obtain further qualifications in Psychology in order to become Clinical, Educational, Occupational or Research Psychologists Extra-curricular enrichment opportunities Regular support sessions will be available after school during some school holidays to help students with independent study, projects and exam preparation. Students are often invited to attend University Masterclasses to prepare them for University level study and to support A Level attainment.

Entry requirements

English and Core Science GCSEs at grade 4 or above.
