Health and Social Care Level 3 Exam Board: Edexcel Course leader: Mrs Bell-Bayliss Course name: Pearson BTEC Level 3 National Extended Certificate in Health and Social Care Contact: BAE@moseley.bham.sch.uk General Information The aim of this qualification is to provide you with an introduction to the Health and Social Care sector. This qualification will enable you to develop technical knowledge and academic skills in order to ensure that you are able to progress to University or vocational based alternatives. During this qualification you will generate an in-depth understanding of human development and the implications of illnesses on development. You will also develop an understanding of the various professions and career routes within the sector, enabling you to become more informed about the careers that makeup such a vast sector. The course contains considerably vocational content and we encourage all students to conduct work experience to bring the subject to life Course Outline Edexcel BTEC Level 3 The Level 3 BTEC in Health and Social Care is a two-year full time course and is equivalent to an A-Level. You will study 3 mandatory units and 1 optional unit over the 2-years. Two of these are examination units and the other two units are coursework units that will be marked internally and checked by Edexcel. Mandatory Units (up to 6 from the following) Unit 1- Human Lifespan Development (Exam) Unit 2- Working in Health and Social Care (Exam) Unit 5- Meeting Individual Care and Support Needs (Coursework) Unit 11- Psychological Perspectives (Coursework) 83% of the course is made up of mandatory content. 58% of the course is externally assessed in the form of examinations. Careers and Higher Education Opportunities Recent students have undertaken to study degrees in Nursing, Social work, teaching and midwifery. However, a wide range of higher education opportunities exist, outside of these traditional options of study. Where can you get more information? www.edexcel.com www.nhs.uk Extra-curricular enrichment opportunities Extra-curricular opportunities will include, opportunities to meet sector professionals, attend University conferences and also support to access work placement opportunities in the sector. Throughout these three strands core concepts will also be examined. These include the following topics: 1. Biological compounds 2. Cell structure and organisation 3. Cell membrane and transport 4. Enzymes 5. Nucleic acids and their functions. Practical work will be assessed throughout the two year course. At the end of which depending on your performance you will either receive an A level in Biology with or without the practical endorsement. Careers and Higher Education Opportunities This year two very talent biologist went to the University of Birmingham to study Medicine and to Aston University to study dentistry respectively. Recent students have taken degrees in Biomedical Science, Natural Science, Pharmacy and Psychology. There is also opportunity for students to help pitch science to our younger students though their involvement in the KS3 science club that runs during a lunchtime slot.
