
Sociology is the study of Society: Of social groups, institutions and organisations and how people interact within them. Sociology aims to examine and explain the role of societies in shaping human behaviour and identity. Students of Sociology will look at historic and contemporary research into a range of different social areas, from Crime to Education, in order to develop a comprehensive understanding of the relationship between society and different types of behaviour. Further to this, students will gain an understanding of the sociological research process, and the opportunity to design their own research projects. Areas of study include (but are not limited to): Research Methods – designing, conducting, assessing and evaluating research Theory and Perspectives – the key theories and perspectives that underpin Sociology Education – theories around the role and functions of the education system Culture & Identity – the influences from society and culture that shape individuals Beliefs in Society – the role of religion, belief and ideology in society Crime & Deviance – sociological theories about crime, the law and criminal offenders
Sociology assessment is essay-based, therefore a Grade 5 or (preferably) higher in English Language and one Humanities subject is required.
