Course summary

English Literature explores ‘art’ texts such as poems, plays and novels. It is a highly-regarded course that is ideal for students who enjoy reading and discussion. The course will introduce students to a range of work that will broaden their knowledge of the world, improve their verbal and written communication skills and develop their ability to analyse and evaluate. English Literature students study a range of poetry, prose and drama from different time periods. During the course you will explore how writers develop characters and themes, and you will study three texts of different genres including at least one Shakespeare play and some poems written before 1800.

Entry requirements

Academy Entry Requirements: A minimum of five GCSE grades 9 – 4. Students must attain a GCSE grade 5 or above in English Literature.

The course is examined over three components: Paper 1: Love through the ages Written paper: 3 hours (40% of A Level) Paper 2: Texts in shared contexts Written paper: 2 hours 30 minutes (40% of A Level) Non-exam assessment: Texts across time Coursework (20% of A Level)
