
Choosing this Course The Edexcel Level 3 BTEC Extended Certificate in Sport is a qualification which can extend a learner’s programme of study and provide vocational emphasis. This course is especially suitable for those students who have prior knowledge of physical education course, including GCSE PE and other vocational courses. Students will be expected to work with enthusiasm and effort throughout the two year course and be committed to completion of independent research. The assignments will be linked very closely to the theoretical knowledge gained in lessons which will be both classroom based and practical. The Extended Certificate is equivalent to 1 A Level. There is an exam on the topic of Anatomy and Physiology and Fitness Training and programming as well as practical coursework which needs to be sent off to be assessed. You are expected to have a passion for Sport as well as gaining good results at both English and Science at GCSE. GCSE PE is a favourable requirement. Course Content There are FOUR units which are covered over the two years. Three out of the four units are mandatory, with two of these being examined externally. Unit 1 and Unit 2 are examined externally Unit 1, Anatomy and Physiology. Unit 2, Fitness Training and Programming for health, sport and well-being. Unit 3, Professional Development in Sports Industry, is linked to careers and job opportunities in the sporting sector. Other Units Unit 7, Practical Sports Performance Career Opportunities Career options could include working in sports centres, gymnasium or activities centre as well as coaching and instructing sports/activities. Past students have gone on to study Sports Science at Portsmouth, St Marys and Brunel universities.
