Sociology is a wide-ranging subject involving many areas of social life, including: families and households, education, mass media and crime and deviance research methods. To enjoy sociology you need to be interested in the world around you and have an open, enquiring mind. You will learn basic theories or ways of looking at society and develop the skills to assess different views and reach conclusions. You will expand and use knowledge to analyse modern society, critically assess different views on the way society works, explore the core themes of socialisation, culture and identity, social differentiation, and power and stratification. Students should have at least a grade 5 in GCSE English Language (due to the fact that extended writing is the main form of assessment).Prior knowledge of Sociology is not a necessity – it is more important to have a keen interest in the social world and current affairs and a willingness to challenge accepted ideas about society. Where you do not meet the entry requirements, your application will still be considered during interview where we can ascertain your knowledge around this subject.
Assessment is through three externally set papers: Paper 1 Education with Theory and Methods • the relationships between class, gender and ethnicity and educational achievement. • recent reforms to the educational system. Paper 2 Topics in Sociology Options will be selected by the specialist teacher. Paper 3 Crime and Deviance with Theory and Methods • Crime and Deviance - This option focuses on debates in contemporary society through a detailed study of crime and deviance. The social construction of crime and deviance are considered and the ways in which crime is socially distributed, explained and reduced. • Theory and Methods - the nature of sociological thought, the methods of social enquiry
