Course summary

English Literature is an enriching and highly esteemed A-Level course, which is always viewed as an excellent steppingstone to a wide range of university degrees and career paths. Over the two-year course, students will study a range of texts across time including poetry, prose and drama. This provides students with a wealth of literary, cultural and historical knowledge, helping them to become well rounded and insightful young adults equipped for higher academic study. Fundamental to the study of English Literature is the exploration of the writer’s craft. Students will examine how a writer creates meaning through language, form and structural devices. Appreciation of the influence that historical and social factors have on both a writer and a reader, is a key element. Students will finely tune their own analytical reading and writing skills, applying them to the interpretation of texts, both unseen and those studied in class. On the course, students will study texts across time, from Shakespeare to modern novels, providing a broad breadth of literary knowledge through the ages. This course is highly beneficial to applications for Further Education due to its analytical base, prestige and the skills it develops. It will appeal to hardworking, well organised students who have a love of reading and a secure command of written English.
