
During this course you will read widely and independently with set texts from a selection of poetry, prose and drama, from Shakespeare to the present day. You will also be expected to bring your own selection of favourite literature to the study and will be given the opportunity to explore both writers and eras in great detail. You will explore texts, their contexts and their critics in order to become critics yourselves. What you will do: · Study two plays, ‘Othello’ and ‘My Boy Jack’; both war poetry and love poetry through the ages (pre-1900); and the following novels: Regeneration, The Picture of Dorian Gray and Rebecca. · Engage critically and creatively with a substantial body of texts and ways of responding to them. · Develop and effectively apply knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation. · Explore the contexts of texts and others’ interpretations of them. · Undertake independent and sustained studies to deepen your appreciation and understanding of English Literature, including its changing traditions.
