Course summary

This course is ideally suited to: students who have an interest in the nature of the society around them and want to gain an academic understanding of it. Students who are interested in the inequalities in the education and criminal justice system. There are many themes and topics that run through sociology. There is an underlying element of politics, history and even citizenship throughout the course. Studying sociology will allow you to gain a deep understanding regarding issues of equality, globalisation, social control and current affairs. This course will cover: In the first year students will start by completing an introduction. They will consider the structure of society and start to reflect on the core themes of socialisation, culture and identity, alongside social differentiation, power and stratification. Students will then go on to take an in-depth look at the first topic area “Families and Households”. In this topic students will look at family types and their implications for society. Alongside this topic, students will study “Education”. In this topic students will discuss the role of the education system and the range of factors that can affect educational achievement. In the second year students will cover the second topic area of “The Media”. In this topic students will explore who owns the media and how different groups (e.g. ethnicities and gender) are represented by the media. Students will also study “Crime and Deviance” which will give students a deep understanding of the sociological reasons as to why people commit crime and also the solutions to crime. Throughout the two year course students will cover sociological theory and methods. This will give students an understanding of the range of theories in sociology and their usefulness in explaining society within the methods sections students will consider the practical ethical and theoretical implications of carrying out research.
