
This creative and thought-provoking qualification gives students the practical skills, theoretical knowledge and confidence to succeed in a number of careers. They will investigate historical, social, cultural, environmental and economic influences on design and technology, whilst enjoying opportunities to put their learning in to practice by producing products of their choice. Students will gain a real understanding of what it means to be a designer, alongside the knowledge and skills sought by higher education and employers. It offers candidates an opportunity to gain personal satisfaction and a positive experience from working with a variety of medium. Practical problem-solving processes in this subject will encourage students to take a broad view of Product Design, developing their capacity to design and manufacture products and to appreciate the complex relations between design, materials, manufacture and marketing Candidates will: • Develop and sustain their own innovation, creativity and Design and Technology capability, to recognise constraints and to produce high quality products. • Develop a critical understanding of the influences and constraints process have on how products are developed. • Use information and communication technology (ICT) to enhance their design and technological capability. • Recognise the social, moral, spiritual and cultural values inherent in design and technological activity, and develop critical evaluation skills in technical, aesthetic, ethical, economic, environmental, social and cultural contexts. • The work of professional designs and design movements of the past will help students see how trends and styles change and the place their work takes in shaping the products of today. • Coursework is client based and candidates will work with their client in identifying problems and developing unique and sophisticated solutions.
A Grade 6 in Design Technology and a Grade 5 in Maths
50% NEA (non-examined assessment) and 2 exams each worth 25%
