Course summary

History at A Level helps students understand the world we live in today. It is a wide and varied course that allows you to develop fundamental skills and a lifelong interest in the subject. The theme of our course is revolution. In Year 12, we study 17th Century Britain, a time of dramatic change and the creation of a new role for the monarchy. Students also study Russia between 1894-1924, a time when Russia went from Tsarism to Communism. These topics give students an understanding of politics and the development of Europe, which is essential for the Year 13 module on Germany 1871-1990. This module sees Germany prosper and suffer through vast swathes of changes, and requires the ability to make comparisons across time. An element that we are proud of at De Aston School is we allow our students to choose their own investigative study for their independent research. This is a student-led project, where you will be asked to analyse primary and secondary sources to form a judgement. Topics students have chosen have ranged from the fall of Ancient Rome to the responsibility for defeat in the Vietnam War.
