Course summary

Course Description Geography helps you to make sense of the world around you. It's hands on, it's relevant, and it's fun. Our physical and human geography topics cover a wide range of exciting and dynamic global issues including hazards, water and carbon cycles, coastal systems and landscapes, population and the environment, global governance and changing places. You will have the opportunity to do your own fieldwork investigation on any geographical topic which interests you, researching independently and building on your skills to produce a report which is worth 20% of your final grade. To help you with this we will do plenty of fieldwork including a two day residential at Leeson House in Dorset (coastal and urban regeneration) and local fieldwork around the Salisbury area including rivers, carbon sequestration, infiltration rates, traffic counts, interviews, environmental quality surveys, footfall and noise pollution. Geographers are amongst the most employable university graduates. The subject links the arts and sciences and is highly flexible in terms of subject combinations at A Level and the course options available at higher education level. Many geographers work in sustainability, environmental services, human rights, international relations, education, global health planning, town planning, water management, cartography, GIS, conservation, tourism and weather forecasting. The army, police, government, research organisations, law and the business world also love the practical research skills which geographers develop.
