Course summary

Course Description Realise it or not, deep down we are all chemists. Every time we light a match, boil an egg or simply breathe in and out, we perform a chemical reaction. At A Level you will build on the Chemistry you have studied in GCSE, and in some cases you will understand for the first time why reactions happen. You will study the building blocks of life itself and build some of these substances for yourself. Throughout the course, not only will you develop your practical ability but also your understanding of why and how we analyse the results of experiments. You will develop a variety of practical skills underpinned by a broad theoretical knowledge of matter’s composition, structure and properties, reactions and interaction with energy. Chemistry is fundamentally an experimental subject so there are numerous opportunities to use practical experiences to link theory to reality. Our STEM club complements the Science courses by allowing you to develop your own practical project and maybe even gain a Crest Award. Chemistry A Level provides an essential grounding for studying a range of degree courses at university. Previous students have gone on to study medicine, dentistry, biomedical sciences, pharmacy, material science, chemical engineering any many more. Practical skills gained also form a good basis for future work in laboratory work and high level analytical skills are valued by employers in many spheres. Interesting fact about studying this at S6C Chemistry at S6C is taught in modern, purpose built labs. The course involves lots of practical work which prepares you for the study of science at university and is carefully planned to meet the practical endorsement certificate which is an essential part of the course. Topics Studied: Physical chemistry Inorganic chemistry Organic chemistry
