Course summary

Course Description Physics encompasses the study of the Universe from the largest galaxies to the smallest subatomic particles. It is crucial to understanding the world around us, the world inside us, and the world beyond us. It is the most basic and fundamental Science. Physics challenges our imaginations and leads to great discoveries, like computers and lasers, which lead to technologies which change our lives - from healing joints, to curing cancer, to developing sustainable energy solutions. It is only in Physics that you will find yourself thinking about everything from how the Universe started to how a bridge stays up. You will study topics including mechanics, materials, D.C. Circuits, waves and optics, radiation and particle physics, fields, radioactivity and nuclear physics, thermal physics and capacitors. Our STEM club complements the Science courses by allowing you to develop your own practical project and maybe even gain a Crest Award. The course will also give you a firm grounding in the importance of the application of mathematics in Science. Overall, you will become a more confident physicist, starting to understand the world around you and exploring how you can describe and solve the challenges within it. Physics A Level provides an essential grounding for studying a range of degree courses at university. These include degrees in physics and astronomy, engineering, chemistry, mathematics, physical sciences and many more. Interesting fact about studying this at S6C Physics at S6C is taught in modern, purpose built labs, and you will also have the opportunity to attend the Physics in Action Conference in London. The course involves lots of practical work which prepares you for the study of science at university, and which is carefully planned to meet the practical endorsement certificate which is an essential part of the course.

How you'll be assessed

This A Level course is examined through three exams at the end of the second year of study, two of which are based on the course content and the third is to examine your knowledge of practical work, skills and techniques. The exams will contain questions that test your mathematical skills which are worth 40% of the overall grade.
