Course summary

Why study Spanish? Studying Spanish gives student’s insight into the Spanish-speaking countries’ customs and traditions. Studying topics such as Festivals will allow them to widen their understanding of the Spanish-speaking world and will encourage them to have an open mind about cultural differences and beliefs. Students will be able to compare their own culture to other cultures within the Spanish-speaking world. Spanish links to a variety of different professions and career pathways. Spanish (combined with another subject) also can be beneficial to a range of other fields, including, but not limited to; Journalism, Law, Education and Marketing.

Assessment

External examinations Paper 1 – 2 hour 45 minutes exam - 25% (30 marks) • 30 marks awarded for two writing tasks (15 marks each) • You will need to write 70-150 words for each of the two writing tasks • Part of the task includes choosing amongst three text types. You will gain marks for choosing the most appropriate one for the task and adhering to the relevant conventions. Paper 2 – 1 hour 45 minutes exam - 25% There are separate sections for the listening comprehension and the reading comprehension (65 marks in total) • The Listening comprehension (45 minutes) (25 marks) • The Reading comprehension (1 hour) (40 marks) These are based on three audio texts (Listening) and three written texts (Reading) and relate to the 5 topic areas. Internal evaluation: The individual oral – 25 % (30 marks) Evaluated and conducted in school & moderated by an IB examiner. The Individual Oral is conducted at the end of the course. A conversation with the teacher based on a visual stimulus and at least another one of the topic areas of the course.
