Course summary

As an Acting student, you are likely to be creative, flexible and curious. This qualification will give you the tools you need to work towards a career in the performing arts. As your understanding and experience of acting develop, you will gain an insight into the range of career paths available. Your learning experience will also be enhanced by working with visiting industry professionals. What will I study? The UAL Level 3 Extended Diploma in Acting is equivalent to three A-Levels and suitable for progression onto Higher Education. In your first year, you will develop your skills in voice and movement – typical projects will include performing scripted works and devising theatre. In year two, you will study classical theatre and directing and learn how to prepare for auditions. You will also have the opportunity to study a ‘specialist’ subject. Throughout the course you will develop your interpersonal, critical and decision-making abilities, which will serve you well in a range of careers. What will I be doing? You will have plenty of performance opportunities, both in our purpose-built Willy Russell Studio Theatre and within other performing arts spaces, both in college and at other venues. You will study both the theory and the practice of a wide range of acting and performance styles (suited both for the stage and for other performance-based media), but will still have the opportunity to specialise in the areas which interest you most. Our project-based learning approach is delivered through workshops, assignments and practical tasks, which will be complemented by masterclasses and visits from industry professionals. You will also collaborate with students on other courses to create a series of performances throughout the year. There will be a number of opportunities for you to complete work experience, both in college (in response to ‘live briefs’ from the industry) and outside of college, across Liverpool and beyond. Are there any extra-curricular activities? We offer a range of enrichment opportunities to complement your studies and to further your interests. In past years, these have included scriptwriting, directing, musical theatre, choir, social action group and student council. Students also regularly undertake theatre trips to venues in Liverpool, Manchester and London.

Entry requirements

We require a predicted minimum of five GCSEs at grade 9-4/ A*-C, ideally including Maths and English. If you enrol with us and you haven't got a grade 4/C or above in Maths and/or English, we will support you to retake these subjects as part of your study programme. However, as retaking these GCSEs will be an additional demand on your time, it is in your interest to work to pass them the first time round. All students, regardless of GCSE attainment, will be expected to make further progress in their communication and mathematical skills. Opportunities to do this will be embedded in course assignment tasks, as well as in work experience and other activities.
