Combined English Language and Literature
Course summary
Students will develop and apply a knowledge of literary analysis and evaluation through an understanding of linguistic concepts and methods. They will combine linguistic and literary approaches in the reading and interpretation of fiction and non-fiction texts to demonstrate how the two disciplines interlink to form meaning. The study of a range of texts, in differing modes, ensures a deep understanding of the machinations of language and the deliberate, and, at times, accidental, construction of meaning. This qualification will develop intellectual maturity and promote critical reflection, furthering independence, tolerance and the consideration of alternative viewpoints. These skills are key to the wider world of work and higher education and will ensure the necessary qualities that employers and universities appreciate in their candidates. The course also offers the opportunity to indulge student creativity, where they are given the opportunity to write in a chosen literary genre style and also in a non-literary format. This element of the course is supplemented by their study of these differing styles and will allow students to demonstrate their expertise as producers of language for a range of audiences.
