Course summary

What will I study? • The use of art and design practice to develop ideas and produce personal work • Drawing and painting, exploring a variety of materials and a range of tools. • Sculpture, exploring the production of three-dimensional form in a variety of materials • Appropriate aspects of the history of Art and Design • Critical analysis and evaluation of drawings, paintings, prints and sculptures through visits to galleries and museums. What skills will I develop? • Practical • Creative • Problem-solving • Research • Critical, analytical and evaluative How will this subject help me with my future career? Fine Art combines well with Photography, Media Studies and other Humanities subjects. Fine Art training will support careers in Graphic and Industrial Design, Architecture, Interior Design, Fashion Design and various careers associated with Design and Technology The skills itemised above are transferable and will benefit the student in any career path. In recent years we have had many students who have successfully combined Art with Physics and Mathematics.

Entry requirements

A student must have 5 x Levels 9 to 4 GCSE passes, with at least a 4 in English Language. A student with a level 5-9 in GCSE Art and Design would be preferable for A Level Art but other students without a qualification in the subject will be considered. Important qualities that a student must bring to the course are high levels of attendance and punctuality, interest and creativity, enthusiasm and self-motivation, and a capacity for hard work. Art is available as an A Level qualification.

How you'll be assessed

Coursework: Students will undertake a personalized project on a theme of their choice. These chosen themes will be developed over a year, starting in y12 and continuing in y13. Coursework will be a combination of supporting studies and personal outcomes. Coursework accounts for 60% of the total mark. Examination: The theme will be set by the examination board. Your work will consist of supporting studies and a personal outcome. The externally set assignment accounts for 40% of your total mark. You will have 15 hours to complete your externally set assignment
