Course summary

Year 1: The year starts with the principles and applications of science unites including topics such as: animal and plant cells tissues atomic structure and bonding; chemical and physical properties of substances related to their uses waves and their application in communications. We also complete the Practical Scientific Procedures and Techniques unit, which introduces you to standard laboratory equipment and techniques, including titration, colorimetry, calorimetry, chromatography, calibration procedures and laboratory safety.  Year 2: Learners will cover the stages involved and the skills needed in planning a scientific investigation: how to record, interpret, draw scientific conclusions and evaluate in the Science Investigation Skills unit. They will then go on to study biological molecules and metabolic pathways and how these enable organisms to function normally. What it can lead to This is a really valuable qualification for anyone hoping to work in a scientific field including healthcare, laboratory work, sports science as well as applications for scientific degrees and apprenticeships Students will leave the course with a good selection of “soft skills” including being able to manage their time, deliver work to deadlines, use a variety of ICT resources and present to a group.
