Course summary

This course provides an opportunity for students to study a subject that is new to them and all students will be on an equal footing when they commence. The course looks at UK and US government and politics and the ever changing political landscape we live in, as well as the political ideologies underpinning it. Students will learn about topics such as systems of government, participation and democracy, voting systems, the role of the EU, and devolution, as well the political ideas behind liberalism, conservatism, socialism and nationalism. Topics may include: Paper 1: Government and Politics of the UK Paper 2: Government and Politics of the USA/Comparative Politics Paper 3: Political ideas Skills that will be developed • Knowledge and understanding • Research skills • Critical thinking • Analytical and evaluative reasoning • Political awareness • Debating skills Post 18 opportunities Students who study this subject gain a contemporary knowledge of the working world. As a subject it is always changing and students need to maintain a grasp on the changes. This course is useful for students pursuing English, History or International Relation courses as well as Journalism and Law.
