Course summary

The Extended Project is an exciting AS Level qualification that allows students to investigate something that interests them and go on to produce a single piece of work that presents the findings. This can take the form of any of the following: A Dissertation(P301)- A project entry for the dissertation is based upon a solution to a research question. An Investigation/Field study (P302)- Should also be based on research questions or hypotheses and should be more reliant on the gathering of information or data that can be analysed. Some example titles of the above briefs; Is it ethical to genetically engineer babies for designer purposes? Do violent computer games contribute to anti-social behaviour? How can sports fitness improve through football? Or, what are the ethical issues around ‘size-0 models’? A Performance(P303) - work is based on a physical activity that displays the learner’s ability to express themselves in a physical manner. This could cover sport, drama and performing arts, musical or vocal forms of expression (such as performance poetry). Example titles include; How can live performance engage an audience in the current technological age? Is music effective as a tool for motivating workers? Or, How can we make classical texts popular to new audiences? An Artefact(P304)-may take many forms, including a finished working prototype, model, artwork or design, and will usually be a solution to a design brief. Example title include; Recycled – design and make a collection of sophisticated jewellery or body adornment from unconventional recycled materials or Nature’s vessels – design and make a series of ceramic forms based on natural containers such as seedpods, shells, nests etc. What can I do after I study the Extended Project Qualification? Students will be inspired by the freedom of choice in selecting their Project topic, which can relate to an area of study or an area of wider personal interest. This flexibility and choice ensures a high level of personalisation for each individual student and can help to inspire disengaged learners. Additional information: Amongst the additional individualised learning benefits of the extended project students open themselves up the possibility of 70 UCAS points.
