
Course outline The full title for this course is: Certificate in Medical Science (1 year, equivalent to half an A level) and Diploma in Medical Science (2 years, equivalent to an A level). The medical science course is designed to prepare learners for careers in health care and medical research. The Diploma has the same UCAS points as one full A level. Year 12 Unit 1: Human Health and disease Unit 2: Physiological measurements techniques Unit 3: Medical science research methods Year 13 Unit 4: Medicines and treatment of disease Unit 5: Clinical Laboratory Tests Unit 6: Medical case study Lesson structure and expectations In order to appropriately assess skills, knowledge and understanding, the specification uses two types of external assessment: Written examinations for unit 1 and unit 6 and an externally set and marked, task based assessment for unit 5. The delivery of the course is through a mixture of theory lessons, practical work, independent study, group work and assignment research. This course is suited to students who are well organised and can take responsibility for their own learning and those that meet deadlines and prepare conscientiously for challenging external examinations. Course requirement A grade 4 in English and mathematics, as well as a grade 5-5 in combined science or a grade 5 in triple Biology. Next Steps The course support progression to a range of job roles within health care and on to training courses such as nursing.
