Geography helps students develop a range of skills involving; Research and analytical, communication literacy and numeracy, (statistical analysis) organisation and team work, problem solving and evaluation and using ICT especially GIS. Fieldwork is an integral part of A Level Geography. Paper 1: Tectonics, Coastal Landscapes, The Water Cycle and Water Insecurity, The carbon Cycle and Energy Security Paper 2: Globalisation, Regenerating Places, Superpowers and Migration, Identity and Sovereignty. Paper 3: Synoptic – Players, Attitudes and Futures of one of the above areas. Independent Investigation: You will choose your own study area (from the topics above) to carry out an independent investigation.
Geography demands a high level of competency in literacy and numeracy skills (grade 5). A Grade 6 for Geography (Grade 5 in some cases following discussion) at GCSE is an advantage because it suggests a sound general understanding of the subject. Students must demonstrate a passion for the subject as many elements of the course require independent study.
You will be assessed through external examinations over the course of the two years. A Level examination will take place at the end of Year 13, if you choose to complete the full course. This will be assessed through 3 externally examined papers (each, 2 hours and 15 minutes) and an Independent Investigation (course work component). Paper 1 (30%), Paper 2 (30%), Paper 3 (20%) and the Independent Investigation (20%).
