Course summary

A-Level Mathematics is an excellent qualification for continuing the study of mathematics at university, and can lead to a rewarding career in finance, engineering, economics or a wide range of other industries. Studying A Level Mathematics encourages learners to think and act mathematically, using mathematical skills and forms of communication to analyse situations within mathematics and elsewhere. Mathematics underpins all areas of our lives and studying maths allows students to think logically and break complex problems into smaller steps. The course emphasises how mathematical ideas are interconnected and demonstrates how mathematics can be applied to model situations using algebra and other representations, to help make sense of data, to understand the physical world and to solve problems in a variety of contexts, including social sciences and business. It provides a thorough grounding in the mathematical tools and techniques often needed in the workplace. The material covered supports the mathematical techniques used in other subjects; Engineering, Physics, Biology and Chemistry. Pure Mathematics One which includes Proof, Algebra and functions, coordinate geometry, Sequences and series, Trigonometry, exponentials and logarithms, differentiation, integration and vectors. Statistics and Mechanics, which includes statistical sampling, data presentation and interpretation, probability, statistical distributions and statistical hypothesis testing, quantities and units in Mechanics, Kinematics, Forces and Newton’s laws and moments.
