Course summary

Music is a subject that offers a broad academic education at Sixth Form level and a valuable qualification leading to entry to a variety of courses and careers. As well as going on to study Music at university or music college, former students of A Level Music at Pate’s have gone on to study Medicine, Languages, Physics, Chemistry, Maths and English, both at Oxbridge and at other prestigious institutions. The listening and appraising component is made up of three topics: Development of the Symphony from 1750 – 1899, Into the 20th Century (including Impressionism, Neo-Classicism and Expressionism) and Jazz (Hot, Swing, BeBop and Cool). In each of these areas we explore the origins of style, thus covering 250 years of music. We examine music in the light of social and historical developments, as well as discovering how music changes style so dramatically over this time. These topics will be linked to a programme of aural development. In composition you will develop your own compositional style for the free composition, as well as undertaking a series of technical exercises in Baroque, Classical and Romantic styles ready for the Brief Composition in Yr 13. If you wish to specialise in composition you will compose a third piece in a different style. In preparation for your final recital in Yr 13 you will perform every half term, either to the class or in public. If you wish to specialise in Performance you will prepare a recital of 10 – 12 minutes, but if composition is your speciality you will prepare a recital of 8 – 10 minutes on your chosen instrument(s). We expect to find in our students both an inquisitive mind and the ability to pursue individual research. An interest in music of all periods and genres is essential. Assessment at the end of Year 13 is by one written examination, one recital and a combination of compositions completed in controlled assessment conditions at the end of the course. Requirements: Pupils must gain a 7/A in Music at GCSE in order to proceed with the subject at A Level. Practical ability of grade 6 at the commencement of the course is also necessary, as well as sound notational skills. A thorough, working-knowledge of grade 5 standard theory is also essential.
