Have you ever wondered how our brain learns new physical skills, why some of us are very quick or our national sport is football? This A level is for students who are interested in sport and the various ways in which it affects individuals and society as a whole. This is an academic subject which mixes theory with practice. The course aims to equip the PE students with both a depth and breadth of knowledge, understanding and skills relating to scientific, socio-cultural and practical aspects of physical education. To develop theoretical knowledge and understanding of the factors that underpin physical activity and sport and use this knowledge to improve performance. Content/Modules covered – 3 papers Physiological factors affecting performance • Applied anatomy and physiology • Exercise physiology • Biomechanics Psychological factors affecting performance • Skill acquisition • Sports psychology Socio-cultural issues in physical activity and sport • Sport and society • Contemporary issues in physical activity and sport Assessment characteristics • 70% - 3 theoretical papers • 15% - 1 practical sport/activity • 15% - 1 verbal evaluation and analysis of performance You will need to be an able physical performer, as the subject requires a committed study in one sport/activity.
