
You may choose this course for a variety of reasons; because you enjoy studying Literature, to develop your reading and appreciation of modern and older texts, or to hone your skills in detailed analysis. Students appreciate the varied discussion and expansion of ideas possible during the course; textual and contextual debates are central to our study of Literature. Using varied critical perspectives is a big part of the course and everyone is encouraged to widen their interpretation of a variety of genres from a broad spread of literary periods. A non-exam unit involves some independent prose reading and comparison.
As a minimum, you will need (or equivalent to); GCSE Mathematics grade 4 GCSE English Language or Literature grade 4 plus three more GCSEs at grade 4. It is recommended you have: GCSE English Literature grade 6
The course is assessed through three exams (worth 80% of your grade) and a coursework unit (worth 20%). The exams are on poetry (30%), drama (30%) and an unseen text analysis (20%). The ‘non exam unit’ is an extended essay (3,500 words) comparing prose texts.
