Classical Civilisation at A-level offers you the opportunity to study the influential cultures of Ancient Greece and Rome. The course covers a wide range of disciplines including literature, history, archaeology, art, architecture, politics and philosophy. In Year 12 you will study Homer’s Odyssey following the Greek hero Odysseus on his eventful journey home after he helps to bring the Trojan War to an end with his genius idea of the wooden horse. Focusing on the art and archaeology of Athens, Olympia and Delphi, you will also study how the Ancient Greeks worshipped their gods and how religion was an essential part of their daily lives. In Year 13 you will explore one of Rome’s foundation myths in the Roman epic, the Aeneid. Aeneas, a refugee from Troy, travels to Italy to found a homeland for his fellow Trojan survivors but establishing a home for the people who will become the Romans will not be easy! As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to participate in trips to museums and significant archaeological sites both at home and abroad. Classicists go on to study a variety of subjects at university although many choose Classics or Ancient History. Classics graduates are highly regarded by employers and pursue careers in many fields including Law, Business, Politics, Teaching, Journalism and Public Relations.
