There are four elements to the A-level Latin course; Unseen Translation, Comprehension or Prose Composition, Verse Literature and Prose Literature. Over the two years of the course, you will build on your knowledge of vocabulary and linguistic structures, reading and translating Latin prose and verse. You will also study a range of literary texts by Ancient Rome’s greatest authors and poets including Cicero, Tacitus, Virgil and Ovid thereby becoming immersed in the history and culture of the Roman world. You will develop your skills of analysis, evaluation and interpretation by examining the ideas and attitudes of ancient cultures which still influence the way we live today. As part of your studies, you will have the opportunity to participate in trips to museums and significant archaeological sites both at home and abroad. What next? Latin and Classical Greek combine well with both Arts and Science subjects. They are facilitating subjects and are highly valued by universities as they provide you with the critical and evaluative skills required at degree level. Students of Classical languages go on to study a variety of subjects at university although many choose to continue with Classics. Classics graduates are highly regarded by employers and Classicists pursue careers in many fields including Law, Business, Politics, Teaching, Journalism and Public Relations.
