Course summary

A Level Government and Politics is a dynamic course that will give you an opportunity to develop your ideas about politics in the UK and USA, as well as pushing you to express your ideas in an organised and analytical way. You will study, debate and analyse concepts such as democracy and what we mean by representation as well as concrete issues such as whether we should move to having an elected House of Lords. In the first year you will look at the UK governance system to challenge commonly held perceptions of fairness and democracy. This course will allow you to look at the decision making processes and evaluate how decisions made by those in and out of power affect life at a local, national and international level. In the second year you will study American Politics and cover topics such as: professional lobbyists, underrepresentation of minorities, the origins of the political system; and the role of the judiciary. Studying US politics will open your eyes to a whole new way of governing a country. You will look at the range of significant features of the US system, from the constitution and the rights it guarantees its citizens to the distribution of power at every level of their government. It will show you the dynamism and the conflicting problems of the American way of life.
