Course summary

Course content The Maths A Level is a highly demanding course and for those who have a very conscientious attitude and the desire to work independently, it is extremely rewarding. All students take an entry exam in the first week to confirm their suitability for the course and students will be able to download a study pack during the summer to help prepare themselves for this. It is vital that students have a hardworking attitude to succeed on this course as the content is much more demanding than that of GCSE and the pace is relatively quick. Other skills developed Pure Maths: This work will underpin all of the work that students do in the two year course by focusing on enhancing and deepening understanding of many topics studied at GCSE as well as introducing new ones. These include calculus, the study of how variables change with respect to each other. There is also work done on sequences and series, trigonometry and radian measure. Mechanics: This focuses on the maths developed by Newton. In it, students will work on problems involving force and acceleration, collisions and impulse, friction and its effect on motion and why balancing a ruler on the edge of a table is pretty tricky. Statistics: Perhaps the most relevant of all the work that the students do in maths, statistics enables students to make sense of the huge amount of data available to them. They will work on analysing large data sets to produce conclusions about what information it contains. In addition, students will study various probability distributions including the binomial and normal distributions. Career value A good grade at A2 level opens up many potential degrees and subsequent careers including engineering, accountancy, investment banking, programming and IT systems analysis.
