Course summary
The study of geography provides a means of observing various aspects of the physical, social and economic environment. The knowledge gained allows the observer to understand the patterns by applying theory to reality. Learning is never completely abstract in geography – as each theory has a location and a context to learn from. Studying geography helps to develop powers of thinking and reasoning. It also covers a wide range of the core skills required at this level, which include communication, problem solving, working with others, ICT and numeracy. Geography is regarded as both an arts and science subject, so combines well with a wide range of subjects. Although demanding, this course is seen as an excellent foundation for the study of this and other subjects in higher education. The study of geography thus requires the development of an intellectual, social, moral and aesthetic appreciation of the world in which we live and have responsibility for.
