Course summary

This is a two-year linear A-Level course consisting of one written paper and two non-examined assessment components. A public performance of 8 minutes can be as a soloist or in an ensemble. Two compositions will be written in response to a brief from the exam board. For the written paper students will learn about musical elements, contexts and languages through the genres of vocal music, instrumental music, music for film, popular music and jazz, fusions and new directions. Units: Performing (30%) | Composing (30%) | Appraising (Written exam 40%) CAREERS As one of the largest industries in the country, offering some of the highest paid jobs, Music can lead to a huge array of further education and careers opportunities. Music can be studied as a stand alone subject and is offered at most universities as well as music conservatoires and colleges. It can also be taken in more specific directions such as acoustics and vibrations, sound engineering and arts business and administration. Careers involving music include musicologist; performer; composer; conductor, teacher; broadcasters; writer; journalist; arts administrator; agent; recording artist; sound engineer; recording equipment design and manufacture, publisher; instrument maker/ repairer; music therapist; running workshops and community groups, the list goes on.

GCSE Grade 6 in Music and/or Grade 5 in chosen instrument
